To add to Dougie's answer, the other big application is in the field of mining. Mining disasters claim many lives, especially underground mines. Accidents are due to methane explosions, rock falls etc. Underground mining machines are usually air-driven or electrical. Therefore, using robots for inspection purposes, as well as full-on mining itself, is a very promising field. It may however involve the robotics expert going underground to inspect and repair faulty equipment, but this would usually be within safe areas of the mine.
