What can a degree in mechanical or electrical engineering do for me? View All
I'm in my second year of a general engineering degree, and would like to decide on which career path to follow. I'm considering either mechanical, electrical, or aerospace (though the last one is probably not as realistic, with an aerospace eng school not being close by). What I would like to know is what are the differences and similarities between the two, what kind of career choices can I look forward to after graduating, and anything else I would need to keep in mind.

both electrical and mechanical engineering are very bright options in the fields of engineering both in terms of opportunities and scope.

Well, mechanical engineering deals more with things behind the scenes. Like air ducts, shafts, hinges and hardwares, air control and other such things.

Electrical deal more with circuits used for lighting, recepticles, security systems, wiring and things of that nature

Either are as good as each other. In both you could move into Design, Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering, Marketing etc. or even Sales (urgh !).

Industry wise both disciplines allow you to move into Aerospace (my vocation) Automotive, Chemical, Computer and various others.

To be honest Electrical engineering is a cleaner trade but we wil always need mechanical engineering and there are probably less people taking this route.
