Switch it off when not in use or into a lower power mode.

Use a laptop. A laptops power usage can be gauged from the temperature of its power supply. If your low power mode keeps the psu cold then you are not using much power.

In principle home computers need to use no energy most of the time as they are often simply waiting for input.

The exception to this is intensive graphics use under inefficient but user friendly operating systems.

If we stop playing games and use efficient but old fashioned operating systems like Dos, with old fashioned but adequate software we could save much energy.

Computers could also be designed to be low power rather than as fast as possible.

Unfortunately laptop battery usage does not seem to be a selling point.
