Something major is underway here at the Hoover Dam Bypass project.  I thought all those interested engineers out there would like to see this project from a different perspective.  Most of us have seen those spectacular aerial photographs of this project and they are really great.  But I can now share with you some pictures that are really down to earth. I recently spoke on the topic of career development in front of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute ASCE chapter in Albany New, York. This chapter is very active and they have about two meetings per month with members. It was a very enjoyable experience as they were all very attentive and asked great questions.

I try to speak on career development in front of as many societies and organizations as possible including both college and professional chapters. Why?

From what I understand about Cloud computing, I think it is an attempt to move us into an on-demand network access to a shared pool of computing resources over the internet, such as software applications, data servers, networks and other services. Read More »

Civil Designers realize the writing is on the wall again. The brutal transformation of draughtsmen to designers was an end of an era, tradition. The legacy remains but that is now in peril. It is the same crisis engineers have been walking through blindly. We are a profession in crisis where our expertise is being sacrificed on the altar of economics. Construction takes the bullet for delays, questions, bad details and confusion. Project engineers promises to do better with better technology. The truth is all problems start in engineering and quality checkers are worth their weight in gold. Don't invest in technology, invest in experience. Put engineering first, management second.

Kicking Off Cardboard Constructions in Schools

By Corporal Willy, Feb. 23rd 2010

Education should not be boring and unrelated to things that kids cannot understand.  The idea here is to help make education fun, which will leave a long lasting learning experience in their minds.  When a teacher sees that the class is fully involved and interested in a project, it can be a great pleasure to teach with great results.  Check out what happened here in this instance.

The promise of crowdsourcing/collaborative design is filled with frothing-at-the-mouth hype juxtaposed against old world skepticism.  Consider me squarely in the middle of this debate.

Consider that Nokia, Motorola, etc spent millions of dollars 'listening to their customers' yet were unable to come to the market first with a breakthrough device like the iphone (in an industry that is their 100% focus, no less).  It was the design brilliance of an individual mind that won here (Steve Jobs).

However, consider Mountain Dew's remarkeable Dewmocracy campaign (http://www.dewmocracymediahub.com).  Through this effort, Mountain Dew has incredibly outsourced almost the entire product launch process to its fan base, from concept to design to marketing tactics.  Clearly this is a hom Read More »

Providing sufficient electrical power reliably requires ongoing monitoring of temperatures within overhead transmission lines that are more susceptible to atmospheric changes than buried cables.  Winds, direct sunshine, ambient temperature, rain, ice and snow all affect the temperature of exposed overhead lines and can dramatically impact load limits they are capable of carrying.
