CATIA in the High School Classroom

Project Description

The offering of CATIA at our school was to serve two purposes:

First – With the help of Southern Utah University WebCT (Internet Supported Course through the Technology Department), we would offer a pre-engineering design class typically taught at a university level to our high school students 130 miles away.

Second – Offer a class that would create interest and enthusiasm toward engineering and computer design while also reinforcing math and science. I feel the introduction of CATIA has accomplished both purposes. It has created a great tie with Southern Utah University and has allowed our students the opportunity to learn this software, which is foreign to many high schools. The student's ability to learn the software has been amazing. The applications from other classes come to life in this type of class. The curriculum creates and expands student's interests to other areas of study. It has really been a neat to watch our students go through this course.


Submission Notes:
The CATIA drawing(s) submitted is the result of the students completing the course. This course covers the Basics of CATIA including Mechanical Design and some Rendering. At the end of the class, student's knowledge was put to the test. Both were real applications. Tube Assembly – This problem was given to the class by an outside company who wanted a revolving paddle placed inside of a tube that would rotate when fluid passed through it. It needed to be supported at both ends. Our goal is to have the Tube Assembly printed on a 3d printer to actually test it. Pine Wood Derby Car - This problem was given to students at area high schools as an end of the year competition at Utah Valley University. They were to design a derby car the same specs as a pine wood derby. Once done, the derby car would be printed on a 3d printer and the students would then add the wheels. It needed to meet certain size and weight requirements. Because of scheduling conflicts, we were unable to compete, but students did complete the design. Most schools did the problem using other software programs.
